NHP Cycle 4 Change | Meet the riders: Kevin Marley

NHP Cycle 4 Change Meet the riders Kevin Marley

NHP is proud to be the naming rights sponsor for the 2020 Cycle 4 Change. This year’s event takes place in the Yarra Valley from March 19-22.

Thirty riders traverse over 470km including tackling nearly 10km of climbing over the four-day event. Each rider has a fundraising goal of at least $2,500, however the total goal for this year’s event is $160,000.

All money raised goes to Southern Cross Kids’ Camps (SCKC), a charitable organisation that puts on camps for children across the country that come from a background of neglect and abuse that otherwise wouldn’t have the chance to do something like attend a camp.

Several NHP employees are again participating in the event this year and we’re getting to know some of the riders in the lead up to the event. This time we spoke to Kevin Marley, who works in Business Development in our Brisbane office.

Have you competed in the event before?

This will be my third event, previous events being in Tasmania and South Australia. Whilst each event has increased in physical intensity, so too has the sense of achievement for helping a great cause.

How have you approached your training?

Balancing work, family life and training is always challenging. Living in Brisbane, most training has been in the early hours to limit the effect of the summer heat and humidity. The NHP Brisbane office has changing facilities and bike storage so commuting to and from the office has been a great help to get in some mid-week kilometres. My training program is varied, I aim for 4-5 rides per week of varying duration, elevation and intensity with a goal of 200 to 300 kilometres per week.

What prompted you to sign up to participate?

Taking part in such an event with the support of NHP allows for great personal achievement and satisfaction that you have contributed to a worthy course in SCKC. The event also provides a goal to increase your fitness and general wellbeing.

Are you looking forward to the event or is it all about the fundraising/end goal?

The event this year is a big personal challenge due to the amount of hill climbing required (9,500m+). Training and fund raising are progressing well and I look forward to the end goal of completing both the fund raising and the ride itself.

How much money do you think you can raise this year?

The fundraising goal is $2500, I am confident that I will achieve this.
